NIH Sailing Association Open House
Join us at our Open House on Thursday, March 8, from 5 to 8 pm at the FAES House, 9101 Old Georgetown Road (on the corner of Old Georgetown Road and Cedar Lane). Explore your interest in learning to sail and discover all the opportunities for sailing with the NIHSA. We will have information about our six week basic training classes, our racing program and all the other social activities the club offers. $5.00 at the door includes pizza, drinks and snacks. NIH Community Orchestra Spring Concert
Join the NIH Community Orchestra on Saturday, March 17th at 7pm for their FREE Spring Concert. Performances include Britten’s Courtly Dances from Gloriana, Grieg’s Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. The concert will take place at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church (9601 Cedar Lane – Bethesda, MD 20814). Donations accepted for NIH charities. Reception to follow.
NIH Tae Kwon Do Class
The NIH Tae Kwon Do (TKD) School is offering regular and beginner’s classes for adults and mature teens, no previous martial arts experience is necessary. Current TKD practitioners of any rank or any other arts are welcome. The curriculum combines traditional striking, kicking, forms, sparring, and other basic martial arts techniques with particular emphasis on self-defense.
The club meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, Rm. B4C18 on Mondays from 6pm – 8pm, Wednesdays from 6pm – 7pm and Fridays from 6pm – 8pm (sparring and self-defense). Registration is $50 per quarter or $150 for the year. The club is also recruiting black belts in Tae Kwon Do to help as instructors. Departmental Tennis League Celebrating its 103rd Season
The HHS Tennis Team participates in the Departmental Tennis League (DTL) with other federal agencies. Competitive doubles matches at USTA 3.5-5.0+ levels are played during the week from 6pm – 8pm, April – Aug, at the Rock Creek Tennis Center (16th and Kennedy Streets, NW). NIH Kenjutsu Club at the Cherry Blossom Festival
The NIH Kenjutsu Club is performing at Sakura Matsuri Japanese street festival on Saturday, April 14, on Pennsylvania Ave, NW, Washington DC. The club, now in its 20th year, is accepting new members from beginners with no experience to advanced practitioners of other martial arts. Training in sword and short staff includes three of the classical Japanese weapon arts. Emphasis is on individual development and partner work using wood or bamboo practice equipment. The club meets in the Porter Center (Bldg. 35, Atrium) on Saturday for sword arts from 9am – 11:15am (yagyu shrinkage ryu) and from 11am – 1pm (jiki shrinkage ryu), and on Sunday for short staff from 9am – 11:15am (shindo muso ryu). NIH R&W-Sponsored Co-Ed Softball League
Looking for a spring and summer outdoor activity? Join the NIH Co-Ed Softball League. Teams play once each week from mid-April to mid-August. There are openings for individual players or an entire team. All skill levels welcome! The league is also seeking someone to umpire occasional games ($25/Game). NIH Aikido Club
The NIH Aikido Club is offering a regular beginner’s class for adults and mature teens. New students are invited to begin classes on any Wednesday. Our curriculum under Irvin Vann-sensei focuses on the principles of Aikido, the art of peace and follows the Aikido Association of America. No experience is necessary. The classes meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, B4C18) on Wednesdays, 7pm – 8:30pm and Saturdays 10:45am – 1pm. Registration is $50 per quarter and $40 for a uniform. Interested in Learning How to Sail?
Sailing Basic Training course: The NIH Sailing Association (NIHSA), an R&W supported club, offers a Sailing Basic Training course for NIH adult employees, contractors, fellows, and patients, and NOAA employees. The summer course will be offered from April 3rd – July 15th. Visit http://www.nihsail.org/training/ for details. The in-class sessions are held on the NIH Bethesda campus and the on-board (on the water) sessions are held at Selby Bay on the South River near Edgewater, MD. Participants must be able to provide or arrange for their own transportation to both the in-class and onboard sessions. Experienced Sailors: If you are an experienced sailor and would like to be able to charter the NIHSA boats please contact us about joining the club and doing a check-out sail. We are also always looking for experienced volunteers to help with both in-class and on-board instruction.
