BETHESDA’S PREMIER CROSSFIT AT THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH

What better place to get healthy and fit than at the National Institutes of Health? CrossFit Daily Medicine trains at the Institute’s Building T-39, aka “The Loft,” on the south side of the Bethesda campus.

Because we know you’re busy (aren’t we all?) we offer classes from dawn to dusk so it’s easy to fit CrossFit into your schedule. We don’t just throw you into a class with a “Good Luck!” No way. At CrossFit Daily Medicine, we’re focused on lifelong functional fitness. CrossFit

Based on the CrossFit prescription of “constantly varied functional movement executed at high intensity,” our CrossFit program combines strength training with the “classic” CrossFit cardio workout. For this 1-hour class, you could be working on pull-ups, rowing, burpees and much more. Every WOD is different so you never get bored!  We scale each workout to your fitness level, so you get the maximum workout every time.

I originally thought that an intense, sweaty workout BEFORE going into lab for a 10-hour day would make me less productive. But after 6+ months with Steve, I can confidently say: hypothesis rejected.

In the spirit of internet clickbait, below are my personal Top 5 benefits of Crossfit Daily Medicine.

5) Lower back pain significantly reduced. I pipette a lot and code a lot — 2 things that are not ideal for your posture and lower back. Obviously correlation is not causation here, but I think that dramatic decrease in my lower back pain is attributable core strengthening in the gym.
4) Time to plan experiments in a quiet lab. I generally do the early morning workouts, and this means I get into the lab earlier too.  This gives me more time to plan things out in a relatively quiet lab while I enjoy my coffee.
3) The hardest part of my day is already over. I work out in the mornings, and having everything else be relatively downhill for the rest of the day is so nice.
2) Stronger/bigger in previously overlooked areas.  My shoulders, legs, forearms, neck, etc. hadn’t benefited that much from focused weightlifting on machines and with dumbbells. But I’ve noticed (and so has my family) that I’ve gotten stronger/bigger since doing the full-body exercises in Crossfit.
1) More energy throughout the day. Don’t take my word for it, Science Magazine explains it better than I could: http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2013/10/how-exercise-beefs-brain
Give it a shot, because I think you’ll like it.  I know I have.

I had the pleasure of training at Crossfit Daily Medicine for over a year.  Going into it I had a few concerns.  (1)My first concern was waking up early and working out before work.  (2)My second concern was although out of shape, I considered myself a weightlifter and athlete not a crossfit athlete.  (3)My final concern was committing to a program.  All of these concerns may be things you think about.  I will say all of my concerns were quickly debunked.
(1)Once I found my groove waking up earlier was actually better for me as the workout is done and calories keep burning.  It helped me beat traffic too.
(2)Crossfit’s blend of gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting, and cardio actually proved to me that I was not really a weightlifter.  I was an athlete that lifted weights and some exercises not very well at all.  My sad quarter squats would make any weightlifter cringe.  My cardio was embarrassing and my flexibility was the worst.  Through progressive training Steve helped me get to a full squat; explode into impressive weightlifting combos; get a full handstand and reach many other achievements.
(3)After a few weeks I was committed and no doubt I wanted to be here versus struggling to workout by myself.
You will get out what you put into this program.  I was able to see huge gains in strength and flexibility.  I also have a core that supports me now and don’t suffer random back, knee and foot pains.  This program was definitely what I needed when I needed.  If you are curious at all then take a chance.  It might change your life!

For over 20 years, I have tried many different workout programs with many different trainers, and I can honestly say that none of them deliver on its promise better than Crossfit Daily Medicine.  I have been part of Crossfit Daily Medicine for almost 5 years now and I have never been in better shape that I am right now.  Coach Steve has developed a program that focuses on all parts of the body, and because of that, I have increased my strength, stamina and overall fitness.  Having recently turned 40, I am well aware that I will need to continue to maintain a level of physical fitness that will keep me healthy for another 40 years and more.  Coach understands that not everyone is at the same skill level and that people have some physical limitations; by having that knowledge, he is able to seamlessly adjust the workouts based on these factors, all while getting the most out of every workout.  I highly recommend Crossfit Daily Medicine to anyone who is ready to commit to a workout program that will get you both physically and mentally fit; in a fun, non-intimidating environment.
