NIH Community Orchestra and Chorus “A Summer Concert Gala” June 9th

“A Summer Concert Gala” will be presented by the NIH Community Orchestra and Chorus. This one-time performance will take place Sunday, June 9th at 3pm at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church, 9601 Cedar Lane, Bethesda, MD.  The Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto #2 opus 22 (soloist Camille Jones) and Selections from Gayaneh by Khachaturian, including Dance of the young maidens, Lullaby, and Sabre Dance. The event also includes Chorus performances from Verdi’s Quattro Pezzi Sacri, including Verdi’s Ave Maria (acapella) No.1 and Stabat Mater No.2 (Orchestra and Chorus).  Free parking, no tickets; donations welcome to benefit the NIH charities. A Caribbean Day Celebration of Caribbean Food and Community Health

Join the Caribbean Association at NIH for their 12th Annual Taste of the Caribbean event on the Bldg. 31A Patio on Thurs., June 20th from 10:30am – 2pm. Celebrate Caribbean food, culture and community health.  Purchase Caribbean food, art and crafts, enjoy live Steel Pan music, entertainment, a free door prize drawing and more. Interested in Learning How to Sail?

NIHSA Basic Training Sailing Course:  The NIH Sailing Association (NIHSA), an R&W supported club, offers a Sailing Basic Training course for NIH adult employees, contractors, fellows, and patients, and NOAA employees.  The Summer session will run from July 16th – August 13th.  Registration  for Spring is open now, visit NIHSA for details.  The in-class sessions are held on the NIH Bethesda campus and the on-board (on the water) sessions are held at Selby Bay on the South River near Edgewater, MD.  Participants must be able to provide or arrange for their own transportation to both the in-class and onboard sessions.   If you are interested in this course and would like more info email

Experienced Sailors:   If you are an experienced sailor and would like to be able to charter the NIHSA boats please contact us about joining the club and doing a check-out sail.  We are also always looking for experienced volunteers to help with both in-class and on-board instruction.

NIH Tae Kwon Do Class

The NIH Tae Kwon Do (TKD) School is offering regular and beginner’s classes for adults and mature teens, no previous martial arts experience is necessary.  Current TKD practitioners of any rank or any other arts are welcome.  The curriculum combines traditional striking, kicking, forms, sparring, and other basic martial arts techniques with particular emphasis on self-defense.   The club meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, Rm. B4C18 on Mondays from 6pm – 8pm, Wednesdays from 6pm – 7pm and Fridays from 6pm – 8pm (sparring and self-defense). Registration is $50 per quarter or $150 for the year. NIH Aikido Club

The NIH Aikido Club is offering a regular beginner’s class for adults and mature teens.  New students are invited to begin classes on any Wednesday.  Our curriculum under Irvin Vann-sensei focuses on the principles of Aikido, the art of peace and follows the Aikido Association of America.  No experience is necessary.  The classes meets in the Thomas Malone Judo and Tae Kwon Do Center (Bldg. 31, B4C18) on Wednesdays, 7pm – 8:30pm and Saturdays 10:45am – 1pm.  Registration is $50 per quarter and $40 for a uniform.  All are welcome to watch regular training sessions. 104th Season of Departmental Tennis League

The HHS Tennis Team participates in the Departmental Tennis League (DTL) with other federal agencies.  Competitive doubles matches at USTA 3.5-5.0+ levels are played during the week from 6pm – 8pm, April – Aug, at the Rock Creek Tennis Center (16th and Kennedy Streets, NW).  Current and former government employees, contractors, spouses, and children (18+) are eligible to play.  Complete a brief survey for details.
